DEBUNKING SIX COMMON LED MYTHS – MYTH 5 & 6

 

As we close out this blog series, we’d like to remind you of what you’ve learned so far about LEDs. First of all, they cost a lot less than you think and have positive impacts on many plants. Secondly, they can flower your plants at an excellent rate and you can even get them in a manipulated spectrum that works best for you.

This week, we’re here to tell you all about the tricky heating situation and how LEDs react with HPS and other traditional sources. Read on to learn how you can optimize your operation by debunking these last two myths.

Myth #5 – LEDs Can’t be Mixed with Other Solutions
The Truth – As an LED solution provider, Illumitex strongly encourages the research into LEDs before making any critical decision, however, we also understand that not every grower is ready to move to an operation that is lit entirely by LEDs. In this instance, a hybrid approach has seen some levels of success. Incorporating LEDs into your traditional layout with HID lights will mean reaping some of the LED benefits such as qualifying for rebates, increasing yield, and improving the quality of your plants. This is a beneficial move for those who are interested in experimenting with their operation or those who understand the benefits of both HID solutions and LED solutions.

Myth #6 – LEDs Are Too Cold for Plant Growth
The Truth – Much like humans that operate best at 98 degrees, plants to have an ideal temperature for photosynthesis. Regulating this temperature is a tricky situation. It is advised to not increase the temperature in your environment to above 80 degrees, yet many plants thrive in temperatures of between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the stage of growth. More practical heating solutions exist such as radiant heat in floors, proper insulation, and radiant heat towers complete with humidity control options. However, because heat rises, it is impractical and costly to expect your lighting solution to make up for the gap in temperate that your plant needs. As the heat escapes a traditional bulb (HPS or MH) it will rise to the ceiling, leaving only remnants of heat to land on the plant canopy. Not to mention, with certain plants including cannabis, a temperate too high will at the very least slow down the plant’s growth and flowering and can potentially burn or dehydrate the plant.

As you can see, there are many things to consider when choosing your lighting source, but whether LEDs are worth it should not be one of those considerations. LEDs provide a multitude of benefits and will end up saving you thousands of dollars per year on operational costs. Not to mention the purchase price in 2018 is reasonable and you have a variety of vendors to choose from.
